LAHORE (PR) - Seeds of Peace (an NGO dedicated to preparing teenagers from areas of conflict with the leadership skills required to promote coexistence and peace), successfully carried out its second Mock Parliament event at Forman Christian College, Lahore. The purpose of the Mock Parliament was to replicate the structure and working of our neighboring country.
A group of 35 students from 13 private and semi private schools of Lahore took part as Members of Parliament of Afghanistan (the Wolesi Jirga) this year. On the first day, the issues that the simulation categorically addressed were the purposes of the NATO and US invasion into Afghanistan, and subsequently, the psychological security of the Afghan citizens that was infiltrated by the invasion.
Representatives discussed in detail the legal status of the Taliban as a political regime in Afghanistan. The representatives also discussed how the Taliban may or may not serve as an inspiration for other extremist factions within the region.
The last thing that was the business of the House on the first day was the issue of sovereignty and its varying interpretations with regards to the Afghanistan invasion. The representatives contributed very intelligent arguments on the topic area and the level of debate was very engaging for all of the participants.
Dr C.J. Dubbash (Executive Vice Rector of FC, College) distributed the prizes amongst the participants. All in all, the Mock Parliament was able to achieve its aim, which was the recognition of issues of Afghanistan along with the learning of parliamentary procedures. In the end Sajjad Ahmad, President Seeds of Peace, Pakistan thanked the participants, their parents for their positive contribution and hoped that parents will encourage their children to continue participating in such activities in future as well.
He also thanked Prof. Alvian Wasim (Coordinator of Formanite Debating Society) and Ms. Almas Butt (Director SOS Children’s Village, Lahore) for their cooperation in organizing this event.
